"Livin' It!" — A Prison Project

"Livin' It!" – A Prison Project is designed to promote change in self esteem and motivation for self care among incarcerated women. Participants develop an understanding of the epidemiology, transmission and pathology of HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections. Participants develop an understanding of harm reduction to reduce risk to themselves and their families. They will be invited to develop skills and methods to live as uniquely gifted, healthy, self-empowered women deserving of love and dignity and encouraged to act as peer educators for others.

"Livin' It!" – A Prison Project, is a program of nine sessions presented weekly to a class of thiry incarcerated women. An occasional Day of Reconnection is held for graduates.

Session topics include:

  1. What's Happening Here?
  2. The Real Deal: Basic HIV/AIDS
  3. Getting with It! Know the Facts!
  4. Growing Away from Addiction
  5. You Don't Have to be Fixed; You Ain't Broke
  6. Seeking After Truth
  7. What's Love Got to Do with It?
  8. Moving Toward Wellness
  9. Loving Me More: Retreat Day and Graduation
  10. A Day of Reconnection

"This series is the most well received outside program we have ever offered. There were over 200 women who applied and inmates continue to ask how they might be a part of the next class. If funding could be obtained, we would welcome the opportunity to present this program on a continuing basis."
